5 reasons why you should spend your extra money on experiences, not things.
It is true that most people are working very hard every single day in order to make money. Making lot of money will allow you to afford more than you need, sometimes there is so much money left after your regular expenses. Therefore, you have to make sure it will be spent on the appropriate way.
You might be wondering what you should spend your money on to become happier. Is it a new possession? Or just go on a long trip and live a new experience?
In the following, we suggest four essential reasons why you should spend your money on experiences rather than things.
1 – Unlike material possessions, new experiences allow you to discover new activities you never thought of practicing. This could be practicing a new sport, or scuba diving, or taking a ride to a beautiful town to have lunch in.
2 – New experiences bring excitement with lasting memories. For example, when you go on a trip with your friends, you will go through lots of events that don’t happen ordinarily, which will allow you to have new discussions, and you will get to know each other in a different way. Even if the trip is not as good as it was supposed to be, there could be an adventurous story to tell in the future.
3 – New possessions don’t define you, because you are not what you wear, nor what you drive. Experiences on the contrary become a part of your identity, because you are defined by the things you have experienced, everything you have seen, and all the things you have done. Buying a new Gucci jacket isn’t going to change who you are, but taking some time off from work to go skiing in the Alps surely will.
4 – The things you buy can be exciting at first; they bring you a lot of joy. But once you get used to them, they become the norm, so the happiness fades quickly and you start looking for better possessions.
Dr. Thomas Gilovich, a psychology professor at Cornell University said, “One of the enemies of happiness is adaptation. We buy things to make us happy, and we succeed. But only for a while. New things are exciting to us at first, but then we adapt to them.”
5 – Experiences allow you to bond with others. Living an experience opens your mind to new cultures and helps you create a social connection with others. When you travel to a new place, you meet the locals and travelers from other cultures, whom you can easily create a bond with by engaging in conversation.
We don’t mean to say you should never buy things, because you have to buy everything you need for your well-being or for your family. But instead of spending your extra money on things to show off or to make a social impression, you better use it to live a good experience that will shape your personality, and change your view of the world. Because at the end of the day, you’re not here to impress anyone, you are here to live a life worth living.
